How to create a Valentine’s Day Heart Box in 2024

Doing crafts for Valentine’s Day is one of the best feelings in the world!

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays for DIY projects.

Creating projects during Valentine’s Day is great to make some house decor, gifts and to get creative. For this DIY project, we’re going to be making a heart box to fill candy or jewelry.

This can be a fun activity to do with your kids, or even if you’re hosting a Galentine’s Day party!

Here are seven steps on how to create a Valentine’s Day heart box:

Step 1: Gather the materials

This DIY project only takes a few items, the main items are paper mache heart boxes from Dollar Tree, paint from Walmart and Valentine’s Day embellishments from local craft stores.

List of supplies

  • 4×4 Paper mache heart box – Dollar Tree
  • Paint- Michaels, Hobby Lobby
  • Paint brushes- Michaels
  • Heart decor- Dollar Tree, Michaels, Hobby Lobby
  • Stickers- Dollar Tree, Michaels, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby

Optional materials

  • Spackle- Home Depot, Walmart, Dollar Tree
  • Piping bags – Walmart, Dollar Tree
  • Piping tips- Dollar Tree, Walmart
  • Glitter- Dollar Tree, Michaels, Hobby Lobby
  • Spray Paint – Home Depot, Michaels, Walmart
  • Hot glue gun – Michaels, Walmart, Hobby Lobby

Step 2: Paint the heart box

Using paint or spray paint, coat entire the heart box. Using the acrylic paint from Walmart did require me to coat the box at least twice.

Make sure to let the paint dry before the next step.

Step 3: Add the spackle (Optional)

Since we’re making an iced heart box that resembles a cake, we’re going to be adding spackle.

Spackle is normally used to seal cracks in walls, and holes but today it’s going to ice our cake … well heart box.

Note: This step is optional if you’re not making an iced heart box, you can skip this part and move on to the next one!

Steps on using the spackle

  • You can add acrylic paint to the spackle, to give it another shade than white.
  • Add the piping tip to the piping bag, then add the spackle using a disposable spoon.
  • Carefully pip the heart box as you like

Tip: Using a large piping tip was not easy and ruined one of my boxes. Try using a smaller one because it’s easier to use in terms of decorating the box.

Step 4: Add embellishments

I got my heart stickers, and glitter decorations from Michaels, Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby.

Make sure to get creative with this part as well! I used Valentine’s Day-themed vase fillers from Dollar Tree as candies and glitter as sprinkles.

Add the embellishments before the spackle dries if you’re using spackle.

Note: Skip steps five and six if you’re not using spackle!

Step 5: Let the spackle dry

The spackle should sit for at least 24 hours or more until it’s finally hardened.

Step 6: Add other embellishments

After the spackle has dried, you can add other embellishments using a hot glue gun to finish off your heart box.

I added a heart sticker to the center of my box for more decoration.

Step 7: Add candy or jewelry

The final step is adding candy, jewelry or whatever you like to the heart box. Just make sure the box is completely dried of everything before you add anything.

Now you have the cutest heart boxes you can use as gifts or decor!
