Did someone say bring the washi tape?
Just create the art.
Let’s Get Into It
What is scrapbooking
To me, scrapbooking is about creating a cohesive look for keepsake memories. It’s a clean design, fine lines, pictures, and decorations that go together to create a neat piece of art.
What is junk journaling

Junk journaling is messier. It’s not pretty lines or designs curated by cohesive decor. Think candy wrapper meets blank sheet.
Scrapbooking is more vacation photos with pretty cardstock.
Essentially, they’re both collaging
Each exercise practices mixed-media collages; you can add decorative stickers from Michaels to your scrapbook or an apple’s QR code sticker to the junk journal.
Both crafts require you to create a piece of artwork that holds significance.

There’s no debate
I notice the discourse on social media. Some may think junk journaling doesn’t require pretty paper and trips to the dollar store for stickers. It should be junk lying around.
“You’re no longer junk journaling; that’s a scrapbook.”
It’s not that deep, if we’re being completely honest.
Just create what you want
If you want to scrapbook your vacation from Italy using receipts, polaroids, and stickers, do it.
If you want to call that process junk journaling, who cares.
As we explore and develop different hobbies, it’s okay to fine-tune them to your liking. Don’t get me wrong, I think you should be able to explain both to people so they have an idea of what you’re doing, but I also think it’s not a big deal for personal crafting.
Need help with junk journaling?
Right now, I am a junk journal girl. I save old receipts, tags, and fabric to create collages in my mixed media notebook.
