Creating a Junk Journal guide by Chandra Alilijah

How to junk journal like a pro by C.Alilijah

Get creative, babes.

So, you’re ready to tackle a new hobby?

Shout out to all my Junk Journal Hotties! You rock! I made this for you.

Here is all you need to know

You need a journal

If you attend my junk journal workshop, you’re in luck. We make ours from scratch.

Decorating a cover

Decorate your cover from scratch using stickers, cardstock, gems, and, of course, your own flair.

Collect materials

Start collecting “junk”.

I typically collect recyclable items from the food I eat, restaurants I visit, candy wrappers, or items with unique packaging.

You can collect the following:

  • Newspaper
  • Magazines
  • Travel brochures
  • Flyers
  • Stickers
  • Tags

Additional items

Make sure to have glue, scissors, tape, pens and markers to assit on your creative journey.

Make a spread

Now it’s time to complete a page.

I suggest making a “mock” page first before you glue. Actually, no.

Just get to glueing! Think of using your “junk” to create an artistic collage that shows emotion, spontanvieity, memories, and your ability to create something using no practical items.

Chan, I don’t like my spread

Keep going, my first spread was a mess. I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. However, over time, I taught myself to keep going and not lose faith. Create great art by doing it; you perfect it as you go.

Bind the book

Now, if you’re my junk journal hotties, this is for you.

At my Junk Journal Workshop, guests are required to bind their own journals unless they brought their own. So, that looks like adding all your pages together (20-25) max as a spiral or staple-bound to complete the books.

Some books have cardstock, lined paper, blank sheets, recipes, song lyrics, or even greeting cards as inserts.

Did you add a mini folder?

Using a notebook binder, bind the book so you can use it daily and add it to your collection.

Remember to have fun

Junk journaling should be a fun activity that involves creating something unique to you, full of memories, and repurposable art.
