Shooting your own festive holiday self portrait 2025: Chanmas

Chanmas is here ! I am bringing you the groovy bits of how to enjoy your holiday with festivities and fun!

There’s only one cowgirl in town. Maybe?

Happy holidays! Kicking off the season with a festive-themed photoshoot is a great way to have fun, get creative and showcase art.

Let’s Get Into It:

Have a theme

Ironically, my theme was already picked for me this year and it was peppermint candy canes.

I received a partnership with Hudsonville Ice Cream for a taste of their new limited edition Peppermint Stick flavor! It was super delicious and a great prop to include in my holiday-themed self-portraits.

You need a good fit

After choosing a theme, find an outfit that will make this portrait feel more groovy.

I wore a classic pair of pajamas featuring teddy bears and candy canes!

Decorate your scene

This is the fun part.

Using silver tinsel, foliage and Christmas trees, I began to set up my scene. I used a $1.25 tablecloth from Dollar Tree and some extra decoration I had lying around from last year.

Save your supplies.

Originally, this shoot was for the ice cream bit, but I made sure to incorporate it all into my self-portraits to create a fun and engaging experience!

Experiment with poses

Once your scene is ready, your fit is together, start thinking about how you’re going to pose.

What’s the mood you’re going for? Sweetheart? Edgy Christmas hottie? What’s the vibe!

“Don’t take it too seriously”

Remember, these are fun, classic DIY at-home self-portraits that can be really pretty on the mantle or Insta-worthy for you and close friends. While I did use a camera for this shoot, you can still create these portraits using your cellphone, a tripod and a timer.

Have fun and don’t overspend! Use what you already have and create.

Oh and don’t forget the edits….

The edits are the bread and butter. It’s what makes your photos stand out. It’s the uniqueness that adds value. Be creative, try something new and build on the look you’re going for!

Let’s Talk About It!

Are you inspired to do your own?

What are you doing creatively for the holiday season?
