2024 is the perfect time to toss out ALL your clothing and start over.
SIKE!
Okay, you do not have to throw out your entire wardrobe, but the beginning of the new year is a great time to toss the clothes you no longer wear to help declutter your closet. Plus, it helps make room for new clothing items.
Here is a guide on how to get rid of your old clothes:
Get a box
It does not have to be a big box it can be a regular-size box or bag.
Remember, the bigger the box, the more you have to donate. The goal is to fill the box or bag with items you no longer want.
Find donation centers
There are many donation centers throughout Michigan where you can donate your old clothing instead of just throwing the item out.
You can also check out my donation center guide for locations in Michigan.
Decide on what to donate
Once you have found a donation center, check out their website or give a call for guidelines.
Mentally prepare yourself to toss clothing items you no longer need or wear.
I typically break it down by closet, drawer by drawer and go from there.
I ask myself these four questions
- Do I like this item?
- What would I pair it with?
- Does it match my style now?
- Have I worn this in the last year?
Asking myself these questions helps me to decide better if I need to keep the items.

Hold yourself accountable
The biggest key to actually getting this done is doing it.
Set out a time and day to get rid of a few pieces. Some clothing may be too small or too big, it’s just collecting dust in the closet it is best to toss it and donate it.
Don’t be afraid to get rid of the clothing if you have no plans to wear it, especially if another person can give it a new life.
Get money for your clothing items
If you want cash for your clothing, some shops and apps can pay you for your items.
Shops like Plato’s Closet, Regeneration New and Used Clothing, and Uptown Cheapskate in Livonia, MI allow you to bring in trendy clothing items for some quick cash.
If you want complete control, you could start selling your items on seller websites such as Depop, Poshmark, or even eBay.
Other apps to sell clothing:
- Grailed: Authentic Streetwear and vintage clothes
- Vinted: Vintage clothing
- TheRealReal: Luxury brand resell
- Facebook Marketplace: Sell a variety of items
- Thredup: Online thrift store
Alternative idea: Rework your clothing
Reworking your clothing means giving it life again and changing it into a new style.
For example, instead of throwing out the old dress, you can make it into a two-piece set or a skirt.
You may need some sewing skills to pull it off but you can start small with a few alterations.
This idea lets us keep the item versus just giving it away.
