6:23 Detroit Shop hosts first Junk Journal Workshop at Rivertown Meijer in Detroit

Our first junk journal workshop was a HIT by C.Alilijah

Growing my small business one step at a time.

I can say I did my thing, and I am very grateful!

Years of dreaming and contemplating turned into reality.

I took on a challenge I wasn’t sure I could do, but I got it done!

Let’s Get Into It

The Junk Journal Workshop

One Friday, a few hours. Weeks and days of planning, up until 4 a.m the night before.

Made an “assistant” adjustment at 1:15 p.m., got there around 2:07 p.m., kinda set up by 3.

Craft ladies are on time!

Little did I know.

My setup

Snack bags at 6:23 Detroit Shop's Junk Journal Workshop

I wanted a classroom vibe, composition book themed, with newspapers, rubrics, and goodie bags filled with snacks.

Embellishments, paper, magazines, glue, rulers, pens, and markers all aligned in pink and black containers.

How can I also forget my wobbly table filled with extra snacks and Sanpellegrino waters!

Was I prepared

On a scale of preparation, I give myself about a 7 if we’re speaking on having enough supplies. I brought almost my entire craft collection.

Now when it came down to having enough help, I was a solid 4. I needed more hands to help me to make the journals, pass out supplies, and provide support.

I know better now that I have to teach my assistants how to use the machines.

Instead, I had to take videos and photos.

I should’ve eaten before I came

While I didn’t feel fatigued, I definitely should’ve eaten breakfast or lunch for an extra boost of energy.

To my knowledge, it didn’t affect the event, but I did feel I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself to everyone.

As a host, that was a goal.

Needing extra hands

That was the main thing: needing someone to work the camera effectively while I help bind the books or greet people as I scurry and finish the last pieces of setting up.

I love my little cousins, and I appreciate their help, but it was their first event in this capacity.

The best part is we all learned and now know what it takes.

I feel blessed

So blessed, I had a mini dance party in my living room Saturday night to celebrate.

It was my first event, and people enjoyed it! The first event I executed with dedication, and it made me feel like that’s what business is about after all.

Building something that expands and develops over time into something you can be proud of.

It’s not just about this being an event under my name, but it was about connecting with my customer directly and realizing, “This feels right.”

Even if I am running off water and two chocolate donuts.

I truly believe I learned a lot about business and the direction of 6:23.

And it’s safe to say the journey is beautiful.
