Because sometimes we have to work on the holiday.
I threw a party, a simple one.
No decorations.
No party hats or activities.
Just food, music, and incense.
Oh, and rain.
Let’s Get Into It
They changed the party date
Normally, we celebrate Memorial Day the day before. Michigan weather is being petty.
Not only have we had tons of rain, but the temperature is shorts one day, then bubble coats the next.
We truly are being impacted by the weird weather.
Yeah, so they changed the date.
I was agitated.
My only off day
Sunday was my only off day for a bit. I get off late on Monday.
Why not still have a party? Even if it’s just me.
Can I pull it off?
Just plan

I wrote down a menu, a bit of what I wanted to do, and got excited.
“Just have your own party”.
Why not enjoy your off day?
Your own company?
At least you can play whatever music you want.

I bbq’d in the rain

As soon as I put the charcoal in the grill, the rain came right on.
My fire died as I put the sausages on.
I had to call for backup because that was a mess.
Was it really a solo party?
Yes! They didn’t stay long.
Black girl joy

I lived in my Black girl joy lore.
Food smelling yummy, rain pouring down, sweet sounds of my favorite tunes.
No faking. Just me, enjoying my own company. No big scene, just me enjoying my own company.
That felt like peace to me.
Have a celebration of my own.
Not being afraid to sit alone
It was just BBQ and rain, but it felt like a sweet love note to myself.
I was very bummed that I wasn’t going to be with my family for the holiday, but I told myself, “It’s okay, just have your own.”
And make it sweet, special.
Still enjoy your off day.
The playlist

It’s incomplete.
Had a little Solanage going, a bit of Larry June.
It was a chill playlist, just something to enjoy for a bit.
When it’s ready, I’ll share it.
Anyway,
Throw yourself a party.
You deserve it.
With love,
Chan
