A new goal setting DIY to try instead of vision boards in 2026

Need a DIY project to try over the weekend?

We’re skipping the vision boards and making DIY “moody” trinket boxes in 2026.

I know what you’re thinking…

Alright, so envision a vision board, but as a wood trinket box instead, filled with your goals, affirmations, photos, and notepads.

It’s perfect for creative bits to store your thoughts and ideas for 2026.

Let’s Get Into It

What is a “moody” trinket box?

I honestly made it up on a random Thursday at 1:38 a.m.

I was working on a blog post, preparing to write about vision boards and crafts, but came up with the idea of a “moody” trinket box.

A trinket box dedicated to you writing out notes, goals, and affirmations you want to accomplish or receive in the new year.

You can also add your own photos, embellishments, stickers and whatever else you want. It can even serve as a junk journal carrying case as well!

How can I create one?

It’s pretty easy. I made mine using a wooden flat box from Michaels that cost me about $8 and craft supplies that I had lying around.

The supplies

  • Wood box
  • Paint, paintbrush
  • Drill
  • Handles (if you want to be able to carry it)
  • Magazines
  • Glue, Mod Podge, Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Embellishments
  • Stickers
  • Collage cutouts from Pinterest

Extra items

  • Pens
  • Notepads
  • Buttons
  • Cardstock
  • Printer

The design

I took apart the wood box to add the handles and I accidentally made the holes too close together for the second handle to go on the opposite side of the box, so my trinket box only has one handle.

I used a wood burner tool to create the holes for the handles because I could not find my drill bits. However, I suggest using a drill to create the holes for the handle!

The ingredients (lol)

My trinket box includes magazine clippings paired with a feather boa, denim scrap pieces, and stickers!

I painted the base of the trunk pink because that’s my favorite color and a part of my brand!

Then I added the magazine scraps, and put my favorite stickers, extra 6:23 Detroit Shop items to make it more personalized!

Get creative

I added my own buttons, stickers and glued notepads inside the cover to make it more like a portable “art kit” to fit my mood, which is that creativity is key this year!

When finding and creating the “total you” , you need crafts like this to help you get expressive!

Don’t forget the affirmations and “moody bits”

The affirmations, mini vision boards, are what make this trinket box very cool and inspiring for the new year!

I picked a few off Pinterest, added them to a document, printed them out, cut them into small pieces and added them to my “moody” trinket box!

Why should I make one?

Because it’s cool and portable.

Honestly, I bought this wooden box for another craft project, but it’s been sitting in my creative space since the summer.

It was time to use it or lose it! Plus, I am trying to make use of my craft supplies before I buy more.

But let’s get to the real answer.

It’s a good trinket box to have, to continually add to it throughout the year. It’s not one poster board that will just sit on your wall and stare at you until you actually complete the goals on it.

The “moody” trinket box can be carried along and used as an asset to help you actively achieve your goals!

Plus, you can get VERY creative with it! Add fabric, sewing notions and it can be a sewing kit!

You can literally tailor the trinket box to whatever you desire!
