I got a library card from the Detroit Public Library in 2026

Chanmas is here ! I am bringing you the groovy bits of how to enjoy your holiday with festivities and fun!

I know you’re probably wondering.

Oh, Chandra thinks she’s so cool because she has a library card? And I do!

So I decided to use my library card.

Let’s Get Into It:

Classy girls go to the library

Before summer ended, I decided to go and get a library card. I hadn’t been to a library since college (lol) and I decided it was time. I wanted to do something new and free. Why not go to the library…

So, I went on a weekday morning, paid my $2 …. to be clear $2.15 parking and signed up for a library card and I felt so joyous.

I went to the 3rd floor of the Detroit Public Library on Woodward because it had “art” in the elevator floor details. When I arrived, I nodded because I was in the right spot, “the cool spot” of the library.

Folks were doing their homework, I was writing in my journal, and some were editing videos. Some of this I assumed, but other bits were probably true.

So… the library.

This is only my SECOND time visiting the main location of the Detroit Public Library, because I don’t live that close and I was really going for their Canva Card Marking demo class. We’ll get to that in a second.

Overall, this time I used my mysterious but fly girl boss agenda and wandered around the library. I found out about events, programs, and even read, well, more so, flipped through a few magazines.

Did you know you can get a copy of the Washington Post at the Detroit Public Library?

You probably didn’t, but now you do!

“My event” didn’t exist

Alright, so the library hosts classes teaching you how to design, tips on using tech, how to sew, they even have a few holiday craft days coming up… well, too bad I didn’t get the memo about some events being a hoax on Eventbrite.

I was going for a Canva Card Making class, but I ended up with a pamphlet detailing the events the library offers.

“Sometimes you gotta go in person to truly know what’s going on or you truly may waste gas and $2 on parking “- Chandra Alilijah

I advise you to go and grab a library card and ask for a pamphlet as well. If the class isn’t on the ACTUAL PRINTED COPY of the library programming, don’t drive there. You may need to call.

I don’t blame the library entirely for the confusion, but I will say that if you are seeking to attend an event or class at any Detroit Public Library, call ahead to confirm that the event is taking place.

It’s still a groovy time

Despite my dismay at not going to the Canva class, I still had a nice time and decided to give myself a challenge – “leave with a holiday romance book”.

I chose “Royal Holiday” by Jasmine Guillory. She’s the only author I noticed and I am currently reading her book,” By the Book.”

You should probably get a library card

Walking around the library was unique. It made me feel powerful as a woman. Not that deep buuuuut, I can say it made me feel good. I realized that I needed an adventure and the library was that free opportunity.

The library doesn’t just offer books or your almanac; it offers you service, a space to go, explore and discover for free.

Use it.

Final thoughts

I challenge you to get a library card in 2026.
