The random library trip pickups.
This week, I explore a bit of the fashion book I read. It was a pretty interesting read for the most part!
Let’s Get Into It
What is Fashion For Dummies?
A basic fashion guidebook that explains how fashion works.
From learning what a designer does to a buyer or how color theory plays into style, the book serves as a tool in the fashion process.
It’s a book by TV personality Jill Martin and writer Pierre A. Lehu, published in 2013. Almost 13 years ago!
Initial thought
I picked up this book to help develop better style and fashion tips.
Some chapters were a bit European-based, if you’re catching my drift, while others were more generalized.
Overall, it’s one of those take what you need and don’t take anything personally.
Their personal style tips
One of the biggest takeaways was to search your closet and wear what you already own.
Rate it, style it, and create something new from it.
Additional tips include creating a classic wardrobe of high-quality pieces with blazers, pumps, slacks, and trench coats.
In today’s society, that would be considered a capsule wardrobe.

What I learned that stood out
The biggest section that inspired me was color theory and how the color chart works, and why it matters in fashion.
That section also described which hues work for different skin tones.
Learning the basics of textiles is a game-changer. Plus, how they incorporate with one another. The difference between a natural fiber and a synthetic one! Natural fibers are higher in cost because they’re more labor-intensive while synthetics are cheaper to manufacture.
Should you read it
In my opinion, yes, if you’re seeking to learn basic fashion material.
The book was dated in terminology and context because it was written a few years ago. However, it does a good job of showing you the roots of fashion.
It’s interesting to see how much fashion has changed in this society! The book highlights how fashion magazines once called the shots, but one can argue that social media plays a big factor nowadays!
