{"id":9599,"date":"2026-08-17T18:23:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T22:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chandraalilijah.com\/?p=9599"},"modified":"2026-08-24T14:40:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T18:40:39","slug":"you-need-to-read-into-the-black-fantastic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chandraalilijah.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/17\/you-need-to-read-into-the-black-fantastic\/","title":{"rendered":"You need to read Into the Black Fantastic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A summer read that is intentional, creative, and intriguing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, I am into Black art right now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let&#8217;s Get Into It<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/9780262047258\/in-the-black-fantastic\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/9780262047258\/in-the-black-fantastic\/\">&#8220;Into the Black Fantastic&#8221; by Ekow Eshun<\/a> is a good read<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A book that teaches and exposes you to Afrofuturism. A subject that consistently draws my interest, and I always find myself circling back to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I gained that Afrofuturism isn&#8217;t just about making futuristic Black characters in fictional worlds. It carries into creating worlds, concepts, and identities of Black people that are often not shown or hidden in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various depictions of Black people, our art, and culture that you see through various channels. This book highlights the importance of not just creating our own art that hits the target but being intentional while doing so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a powerful read. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growing as an artist <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, I am calling myself an artist now because the term &#8220;creative&#8221; is too niche right now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve always been into the arts. I&#8217;ve always loved to create. Just wasn&#8217;t brave enough to start my career officially in art school, but don&#8217;t get me wrong, I love a good story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalism was my canvas for expressionalism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the professional journalism career got redirected to fashion, lifestyle blogger physically having to keep the spark, build the brand, attend the events, stay in the scene, I had to dig a bit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I got BORED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not from being a fashion, lifestyle blogger but I needed stuff to talk about. So, I decided to start reading again and it has truly impacted me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the last few months, I&#8217;ve found myself engulfed in art subjects, and truly going back into what I loved as a kid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Color. Using my hands, paper, glue, gems, scissors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paint is a huge medium for me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Books like &#8220;Into the Black Fantastic&#8221; make me feel excited to open the page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to see the paintings, the drawings, the expressionism from Black artists, and learn something new about my culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Written by a Brit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did a quick Google search of the author; it&#8217;s a British guy. He&#8217;s my skin tone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think what makes this even more interesting is how the black Brits are typically writing our history. Writing our stories and documenting things we either don&#8217;t dig into or are too busy to be curious about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s their stories, their history, their cultures as well, but it also makes sense to me now why I don&#8217;t recognise some of the names mentioned in the book.
