How businesses can make up for January losses in three days\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That box of chocolate and sexy mini dress just paid for dry January. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Literally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know what you\u2019re thinking, Chan: Is this another rant? Yes, it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I have to keep it a buck with you. Valentine\u2019s Day is the ultimate scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure, you should love your lover, but not one day. Every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valentine\u2019s Day is a sham <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about it. The busiest time for retail is late October through November and December, if we’re being honest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even August and September are pretty busy with the back-to-school era. The only month that truly doesn\u2019t get traction is January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wanna know how to make up those sales?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You create one random day to celebrate \u201clove.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get the final product – Valentine\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A day where men rush out to buy that one bouquet he\u2019ll probably never buy again until next year if he\u2019s \u201cone of those\u201d typa men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or that pack of overly, secretly old heart-shaped candy box, and of course, book a meal at one of those fancy restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we can\u2019t forget the outfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the ultimate trio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each retail department wins on Valentine\u2019s Day. The baked good business wins because folks are buying sweets. Your favorite grocery store is your local friend who provides you with the candy and flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need an outfit? Your department store is your go-to for a last-minute pair of slacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for dinner? We\u2019re having steak or seafood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every sector of retail can truly benefit from this holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the hairstylists, makeup, and barbershop industry is winning as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to read a million articles to fact-check; pay attention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the crazy part is, other industries are starting to dig into the pot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The average coffee shop is now hosting date night. Or creating themed concoction drinks that represent love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your local library has an event for you to attend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s truly interesting to see how everyone is benefiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valentine\u2019s Day saves the business <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For quarter 1, sales are low! January is a slow month. Most folks aren\u2019t shopping unless it\u2019s for groceries, toiletries, and calendars. Literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gym membership business goes up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, most aren\u2019t buying a box of chocolate. Most aren\u2019t buying that sexy mini dress paired with the skinny heel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you convince people to shop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tell them their lover only loves them if they buy them a new diamond-cut necklace or heart-shaped balloons with big phrases. Or even the red and pink card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You make your money back by telling people they have to show their affection on this day. If you don\u2019t, \u201cthey\u2019re unloved\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a \u201ccrappy day\u201d for the unsingle, so you create another day for them to feel happy and comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galentine\u2019s Day is born<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now you have a dinner party; not exactly a cost-effective typa event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galentine’s is what Christmas Eve is to Christmas, and what Friendsgiving is to Thanksgiving. They\u2019re just more days to spend more money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s think about the cost of the Galentine\u2019s Day party:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say you want to host a party of six? The larger the party, the more it costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s stick with six. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s at Trinity\u2019s apartment; we\u2019re using her place as the location. So her gas, her light bill, her water, her heat. Trinity is going to decorate. Let\u2019s break down the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cdollar store\u201d route<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A tablecloth, balloons, table decor, plates, napkins, and plasticware from Dollar Tree are all $1.50 a piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the decor alone will cost her about $20 before tax if she gets the essentials plus additional items like placemats, cups, and even table scatter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cI can\u2019t have cheap decor route”<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Now, if she goes to Five Below, she\u2019s going to spend about $4-5 per item, and that can bring her total to at least, let\u2019s say, $45.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who\u2019s bringing the food?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s say Shontay is bringing the charcuterie board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A charcuterie board for six can cost up to $50 for cheeses, crackers, cured meats, olives, and snacks. It\u2019s actually more than $50, but if you shop at Aldi, it\u2019s pretty cost-effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need more than a charcuterie board. Let’s do pizza and wings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mili is bringing the wings and pizza. Everyone gets a heart-shaped pizza? That\u2019s lowkey too expensive, let\u2019s bring two medium, 8 sliced round pizzas, and about 20 wings? That has to be about $50 in this economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe even $60\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before dessert, we\u2019re at least $100 in food.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piper is bringing the desserts, homemade because it\u2019s cheaper. A box of cake is about $2, and icing is about $2 as well. If she adds sprinkles, it\u2019s $1.50. She wants to make cupcakes, though, so she also needs liners. From Dollar Tree, they\u2019re about $1.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So she\u2019s about to spend $6 on about 24 cupcakes! Not horrible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who\u2019s bringing the drinks?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, we only have four guests bringing items. Hmmm, does Piper bring the drinks since she\u2019s only spending $6, or do we have a designated person for that as well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They invite Winter, she\u2019s bringing lemonade for the girlies who want to stay sober and wine for the others! If she goes the expensive route, a bottle of top-shelf Ros\u00e8 is about $30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If she\u2019s feeling on a budget, a mimosa cocktail bottle is about $11, and the lemonade is about $2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One bottle is not enough, double it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s going to spend about $26 on drinks before tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alright, there\u2019s another friend involved named Lonnie who wants to contribute as well. She\u2019s going to bring the crafts, a dish, and a dessert because she got it like that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her craft is about $5 per person. They\u2019re going to paint on canvases, she\u2019s making a spinach dip that\u2019s about $10 for all the ingredients, and she\u2019s bringing cookies from the store that are about $6 for a container of 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lonnie has spent about $46 before tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the total of our party <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s about $198 if you go the budget-friendly route. However, if we added more food, accurate pricing, and – OMG<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We forgot the candy! And trinkets!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone has to bring the candy and trinkets! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl with the total of $6 adds the candy and trinkets to her basket. The candy costs about $15 for all the ladies, and she spent $10 on notebooks, pens, Valentine\u2019s Day cards, and bracelets!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn\u2019t even get to the fashion part of this!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, with our new total, the party came out to be about $223.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not a cheap holiday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mind you, a dinner for two at a fancy restaurant can be about $200\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of VDAY is actually chaotic <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now you know I can\u2019t do this without giving you a bit of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The background of Valentine\u2019s Day is actually scary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women weren\u2019t actually celebrated at all on the day. They were actually\u2026 how far do you want to go down this deep dive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals were actually\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long story short, and I am a victim of this as well – we should know the origins of what we\u2019re celebrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everything should be commercialized, and we\u2019re so far down the line, but we can at least be aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this matters to me <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I own a small business, and we\u2019re often told we have to be on trend with the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If not, you\u2019re behind. (Not really, but it feels like that)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a small business owner who’s fairly new, I want to know why my business should participate in these holidays and why I should create products geared toward commercialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, while this post kinda bashes retail and its dirty ways and how holidays are just days to rip money out of the consumer\u2019s pockets, it also gives me and you thought-provoking questions to ask ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should we participate as a business? As a consumer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can we participate without carrying on the sinister narrative and history of this phenomenon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had fun, but at what cost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yeah, I just sold crafts and pitched my stationery business to couples, solo daters, and other vendors, but that was before I actually knew what I was \u201ccelebrating\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In grade school, it\u2019s a cute little holiday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a realization tonight that challenged my perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have no reason to be sad, and neither do you, because that one day shouldn\u2019t make you feel alone or less worthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You actually saved money, because in real love, every day feels good. They will give you flowers just because, treat you to a nice meal just because, give you love letters and candy JUST BECAUSE\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t equate your worthiness to one day. That\u2019s mind control. Another method to control the masses\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be better than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s not overconsume, let\u2019s enjoy the bunny all year round. Don\u2019t create specific content or products for holidays. Create what you want and add those embellishments because you want to. Not because it\u2019s that time of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone is selling something. And everyone is consuming something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What end of the stick do you want to be on? Or can you dismantle the stick and fine-tune it to your rhythm?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you the creator or the seller of the consumer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
